Travel Rule Implementation: KYC Data Sharing Between VASPs in 2026
The Travel Rule is now enforceable in most major jurisdictions. Here is what compliant VASP-to-VASP data sharing looks like.
FATF Recommendation 16, the Travel Rule, requires virtual asset service providers to share originator and beneficiary information on transactions above a threshold. In 2026 most G20 jurisdictions have implemented it, and enforcement is active.
Data fields required
- Originator name, address, and account number or wallet address
- Beneficiary name and account number or wallet address
- For self-hosted wallets: enhanced due diligence and risk scoring
Secure transmission
VASPs must exchange Travel Rule data through secure, interoperable protocols. SUNRISE, TRP, and SWIFT ISO 20022 are the dominant standards. End-to-end encryption and non-repudiation are mandatory.
Privacy and data minimisation
Share only what the rule requires. Encrypt in transit and at rest. Retain only for the statutory period. Our crypto exchange KYC product includes Travel Rule message handling with privacy-by-default design.
