Video KYC Compliance Guide: RBI, EU AMLD and Global Standards

Video KYC is recognised in most major jurisdictions, but the procedural requirements vary widely. Here is the playbook.

9 min read

Video KYC, sometimes called V-CIP, replaces the in-branch onboarding visit with a recorded video interview led by a trained agent. It is now accepted in India under RBI guidelines, across the EU under AMLD requirements, and in most major financial jurisdictions.

What every regulator wants to see

  • Live document capture, not a re-uploaded scan
  • A real-time selfie taken during the call
  • Geo-location and IP attribution recorded on the session
  • An encrypted recording retained for the statutory period
  • An audit log that links the agent, the customer and the outcome

India-specific requirements

RBI's V-CIP guidelines require the agent to be a trained employee of the regulated entity (or a delegated KYC partner), random session checks by the principal officer, and storage on Indian servers for resident customers.

EU AMLD considerations

Under AMLD, video KYC is generally accepted as an enhanced due diligence measure. Several member states require eIDAS-compatible electronic signing on the verification record, and France additionally requires PVID certification of the vendor.
